"Living on my nerves", "My nerves are worn to a frazzle", "You're getting on my nerves"
It's not surprising how often our 'nerves' crop up in conversation, as they are so important to us.
It seems that we are living increasingly complicated, disjointed and busy lives. We do not find time to truly relax and recuperate from the rigours of our day and the result is that we can find ourselves feeling increasingly anxious and troubled.
If we find ourselves in a stressful situation, thousands of years of evolution have ensured that our bodies and minds are geared up to combat it - the 'flight or fight' response (imagine a bear coming towards you in your cave!). If neither of these options are appropriate - and they wouldn't be if the bear in question is your boss who is on your back - then the feelings are stifled and turned inwards. With no outlet for these emotions the natural stress-releasing mechanisms our bodies employ to bring back equilibrium can not happen, and the stress will show itself in some other way - blushing, insomnia, panic attacks.
The links between stress and the functioning (or malfunctioning) of the body and mind are proven and hypnosis gives us the opportunity to bring the mind back to a point of peace and calm so that outward manifestations of stress can be released.
